H1N1 Basics

H1N1 flu is a respiratory disease caused by the type A influenza virus. It is a new influenza virus causing illness in people worldwide. This virus is spreading from person-to-person, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread. Like seasonal flu, H1N1 flu in humans can vary in severity from mild to severe.

Some basic hygiene and social distancing precautions that can be used in every workplace include the following

o Stay home if you are sick.
o Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds or with a hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
o Avoid touching your nose, mouth and eyes.
o Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue. Dispose of tissues in no-touch trash receptacles.
o Wash your hands or use a hand sanitizer after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose.
o Avoid close contact (within 1.5mtrs) with co-workers and customers.
o Avoid shaking hands and always wash your hands after physical contact with others.
o If wearing gloves, always wash your hands after removing them.
o Keep frequently touched common surfaces (for example, telephones, computer equipment, etc.) hygienically clean.
o Try not to use other parties phones, desks, offices, or other work tools and equipment.
o Minimize group meetings; use e-mails, phones and text messaging. If meetings are unavoidable, avoid close contact (within 1.5mtrs) with others and ensure that the meeting room is appropriately ventilated.
o Limit unnecessary visitors to the workplace.
o Maintain a healthy lifestyle; attention to rest, diet, exercise and relaxation helps maintain physical and emotional health.

PRIORITY: If you are made aware of attracting the H1N1 virus you must alert the authorities.
